And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
When your life is complete and you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will raise up your descendant who comes from you, and I will establish his kingdom.
God is promising David that after he dies, one of his own descendants will become king and have an established kingdom.
📚 Historical Context
In 2 Samuel 7, King David had just established Jerusalem as his capital and desired to build a permanent house for God, but the Lord, through the prophet Nathan, redirected his focus to God's greater plan. This verse is part of God's covenant with David, promising that after his death, a descendant from his line would be raised up to establish an enduring kingdom. This promise laid the foundation for the Davidic dynasty and foreshadowed the coming of the Messiah in biblical history.
